Smith's adventures have taken him around the world and back, to places that most of us have only seen in National Geographic or on the Discovery Channel. More times than not, he is the only American in exotic foreign lands. Yet with each adventure, Smith brings a sense of wonder and a curiosity to explore different cultures. This openness is what he tried to promote with the Freedom Over Fear Pentathlon.

On October 17, 2001, in San Francisco, David and a group of specially-invited participants:

Swam from Fort Point at the base of the Golden Gate to Crissy Field;

Kayaked to Candlestick Park;

Tandem Biked to Ocean Beach;

Ran to the Cliff House; and

Mountain biked back to the Golden Gate Bridge.
